The Showroom schedule reminder for Jan. 26th -Feb. 3rd

2012 and already the month of January is almost over…is it because we are having so much fun?   I hope so…at least in retrospect

anywho Thursday night has a two solo acts that work on monster projects, intricate selections of sounds to get their individual messages out there…one of those take the chance  and you will not be disappointed

Friday has Chris Ronald coming to town…an England born Vancouverite, he is known for his vocal prowess….a songwriter as well, his passions are laid out in his music

Saturday is a rock out night with Stone Vaughn Toole from Ladysmith and Midnite Hours (rock/roots/reggae) from Vancouver….a wonderful rock- ish journey

Sunday has Chris Watoski coming over from Vancouver with his band to showcase the great tunage he has created…check out his links and see if you want to be here

Monday sees local young folk rockers The Royal Canadians opening for Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk….another link referral on this one….let them explain themselves

For The Love Of Words falls on the last day of the month as well as the last Tuesday this month…Bill Levity hosts this evening of poetry/prose and all things spoken…

Wednesday has the youth infused ‘hobo’ music…from Pender Island , it is organic…and fun

Thursday is Jeff Pike aka Windborn…the band is absent for this date but it is all his material and he does deliver oh so well…has  a fan base on the island so you wont be alone if you come to the show

Friday is the long awaited return of Gerry Barnum….using roots/blues to trap you in, he takes you on a musical journey that soothes your soul…yes you could say soul music….

Showroom update January 10th to 22nd

Well, keeping up with this posting thang always seems to get a bit behind….so let us see if we can get back on track….

Tuesday January 10th is the first Blues Tuesday of 2012….new players promising to come out and take advantage of an evening of community blues power….always cool and Thor and Marty set the example needed just right….

Wednesday will be a short notice Scrabble session again…looking at throwing more of these into the fray…so much fun….and you learn so much

Thursday sees Leathan Milne/ Colin Easthope, two singer songwriters from Vancouver coming to the island for a weekend tour…seemed a good idea to give them an extra night….check out their links…might be just what you need on a Thursday evening in January…

 

Friday has two bands from north of Duncan (Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay) bringing their excellent indie rock to the Showroom….Christian based, not only good music but great messages

 

Saturday is indie rock again with a slight twist…3 acts starting off with a solo show…all rock and all well done….the June Fiasco ‘s first time out of the slot…and they are ready…

 

Sunday will be another day for Scrabble….2pm start and an evening off for us….

 

Monday night is a treat with Andy White returning to the Showroom….last here as Fearing and White (Stephen Fearing of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings as well as an extremely great solo career)….Andy is Irish from the Isle and did spend some time in Austarlia….a very proficient songwriter, his delivery is memorizing

Tuesday Night Dress Rehearsal is on the money one more night….an open mic evening….new and veteran players are eagerly invited

Wednesday will have gospel singer Chelsea Nesbit from the east coast gracing the Showroom stage….award winning and nominated in many categories, she comes to entertain….

The Thursday January 19th is vacant right now but keep an eye out for this one.

Friday is a killer young band from Victoria…rockfish without killing your ears

Saturday is a treat for all those that like B3 Hammond Organs….Tim Boss from Victoria along with his drummer friend Matt lay down some great grooves as duo….youch…it is fun….3rd time returning

Youth Dress Rehearsal on the 22nd for kids under 16 at 2pm

xmas season is here…the one I grew up with at least…now it is ‘holiday’ or ‘festive’ season, but either which way please remember we are on our way to summer….yep shorter nights, earlier sunrises….the winter solstice has taken place and so onward ho to summer….but still back at xmas, our annual breakfast for those who will be alone xmas morning and would’t mind hanging out with other like minded souls starts at 7am and with a movie at 10am we should be over by noon..

….for all those with company visiting and wanting to be entertained…read the schedule…it is all explained there

boxing day is always fun….an open mic concept and a gift exchange

tuesday’s For The Love Of Words has it final offerings for 2011…and now in its 5th year….come give BillLevity some season’s greetings

wednesday has Anna Borg bringing her family get together to the Showroom and is hoping you will join them as she performs for their out of town guests

thursday is a night of young rock’n'roll….school is out for the holidays and these kids are going to rock their’s and yours world

friday is the return to the valley of Joe Charron, performing solo some of his new tunes and all the old tasty ones that we will all remember…special guest on cello…Angela James….tickets will go fast

(and if you want to dance the night before New Years Eve, check out the Crofton Hotel Showcase Venue as Tropic Mayhem takes to the stage to give your dancing shoes a good workout)

saturday night is Georgia’s birthday and new years eve and so we are having a party after 8pm with the ‘record’ player being put to use….now have it set up so as I can spin some of my favourite vinyl releases ( I have many) and looks like an ‘internet radio’ format is shaping up…..like a radio/video show on ustream….way cool…stay tuned…..anyway we will move chairs and there will be some dancing going on for the party…..bring some treats to share for the munchie table and have some fun with us

starting off the new year with Hope….yes, Hope’s monthly Showroom appearance takes place on the first day of the new year and what way to head forward….

same as monday night….3 musical acts staring off the new year with intent to change the world with their music….good vibes for all involved

tuesday is the first Dress Rehearsal of 2012 so come give this year a big kick off

as we head into 2012, all restraints are set aside….stay tuned as we intend to ‘rock’ the world

Dec 13th – 19th at the Duncan Garage Showroom

Good day – some great shows coming to the Showroom this week….
Tues Dec 13th - Blues Tuesday - where various off-duty blues players get together and rent ice time to shoot a game or two of musical shinny…always interesting…hosts Thor and the Thundercats …$10 for audience… $5 for musicians.
Weds Dec 14th 8pm – Stowaways / Dan Weisenberg - classic stringband musical styles including bluegrass, blues, swing, and oldtime …a young gifted roots/blues guitar player .…both acts extremely proficient in their respective categories.  $15 door $12 advance.
Thurs Dec 15th 8pm – McCandless Family Band - a fathers dream come true….your two daughters marry musicians and your son sings with as much passion as you….  they are all songwriters and then when they all move to the same town …oh oh…a band is going to come out of this one.  I highly recommend their debut CD as well as their ‘live’ concert.  $20 door $15 advance.
Fri Dec 16th 8pm – An evening of island hip hop Skulastic / Wes Paul / BCBOne Fifty Productions / Prophet
doing a ‘live’ stream for this show …playing to the camera so it’s a sit down show but it will still rock you out…$15 door $12 advance.
Sat Dec 17th8pm – Mother Tongue Band - these guys rock out…how does one describe the sensation of being brought along on a journeyby musicians who see this project as their intimate solace to the world they live in… they do have fun…lots of fun…and are a tight band, very tight…I call it a great night at the Showroom…come see why.  $15 door $12 advance .
Sun Dec 18th 2pm – Conner Searle Student Showcase - Conner asked if we could showcase some of his guitar students in our ‘theatre’ setting, giving them something to work towards… they are excited and what better present for the families than to watch their child proudly perform. $10.
Sun Dec 18th 8pm – David Vest Band - an authentic, Southern-bred boogie-woogie piano player he has been rockin’ and shoutin’ the blues since 1957. An Alabama native and longtime Texas resident,he has been filling dance and concert halls from Vancouver Island to southern Ontario since relocating to Canada.  Highlights of his long career include performing withBig Joe Turner in the early ’60s,working with Jimmy T99 Nelson and Lavelle White, touring Eastern Europe, and receiving the direct “laying on of hands”from Texas piano legends Floyd Dixon, Big Walter the Thunderbird, and Katie Webster. As a teenager, he sat in with the Jimmy Dorsey Band and Bill Black’s Combo,and jammed with members of Woody Herman’s New Thundering Herd.  In addition to his blues and jazz credentials,Vest has also appeared with many country music legends,including Red Foley and Faron Young.  He wrote the first songs ever recorded by Tammy Wynette. (The story of their relationship is chronicled in Jimmy McDonough’s recent best-seller,”Tammy Wynette: Tragic Country Queen.”)  OK so he has credentials.  You coming to see him?  $25 door $20 advance.
Mon Dec 19th - Taliethe Sangha - t’is the Christmas season and some people like to sing Christmas carols and all those other great Christmas favourites.  Taliethe is a musical theatre enthusiast from the south island and intends to bring friends, family, theatre society and choir members all to join in….it is the holidays.  $12 door $10 advance

Showroom update Dec 2nd to Dec 8th

So here it is Friday night and as it turns out we do have entertainment tonite….

 

Dave Philips returns for his 3rd visit to the Showroom… singer/songwriter/guitar player from Vancouver, he won our hearts right away and he is a contender in my view…show starts at the far side of 8pm …sharp.. and will be live streamed as usual….. (don’t forget the ‘donate ‘ button…especially if you enjoy the show)

 

Saturday night has Georgia’s Belly Dancing Extravaganza…a true showing of the many talented belly dancers from the south island…still some tickets left…and there shouldn’t be…

 

Also on Saturday night for those that want to dance themselves, please go to the Crofton Hotel Showcase Venue where Thor and the Thundercats hit the stage at 9pm… king of the blues , there is quite a bit of familiar rock’n’roll tunes thrown in to engage you in tearing up the dance floor ….and only a $10 ticket

 

Sunday has the Hope King Hour moved to a 4pm slot so as to accommodate Hope’s theatre rehearsal….she is so worth the time spent to get here…and only $10

 

Sunday evening at 8pm sees Emily Spiller bring her soul driven original tunes served up in a new way…pre-recorded back-up with a loop machine to work magic with….was at the Summer Festival this year and I have had her come back to the Showroom 5 times now….she is so cool

 

Monday night….yes a Monday night…Ron Hynes, singer/songwriter of renown from Newfoundland…this is one of those concerts you really shouldn’t miss….$25 advance ticket price or $30 at the door

 

Dress Rehearsal Tuesday is the ‘open’ mic evening of the month so grab your instrument and get on stage….we all have fun

 

Wednesday and Gregory Hoskins at the Showroom…the most played cd at the Showroom, this guy is just another very great singer/songwriter that so needs to be heard…you will not be disappointed…so please trust my judgment on this one

 

Thursday …Sid Johnson / Evan Miller….Ladysmith takes to the Showroom stage….both really good singer/songwriters….

Showroom update Nov 16th – 27th

Hello.  Here are the shows coming up Nov 16th-27th.

 

Weds Nov 16th – I Ain’t Dead Yet – a one man show about Woodie Guthrie… using a unique blend of storytelling, spoken word and live musical performance.

 

Thurs Nov 17th – Andy Sheppard – Find The Others Tour – a live music show, synchronized with projected video, the result of collaborations with some of the country’s most talented musicians and visual artists.

 

Fri Nov 18th 8pm – Coco Jaffro – There is no other band that moves us like these guys do… original tunes in a driving funk based tradition.

 

Fri Nov 18th 11pm – Enigma – a return visit to the Showroom… with the freakiest stage show you may ever witness… special late night performance.

 

Sat Nov 19th – Christa Couture / Cris Derksen / E.S.L. – an evening of diverse original music designed with intent to move your soul… on an island tour, we are fortunate to have them stop here.

 

Sun Nov 20th 2pm – Washington & Cook – Maureen Washington and Daniel Cook bring their funkified urban jazz to the Showroom as often as I can get them to.

 

Sun Nov 20th 8pm – Marianne Girard – acoustic/country/folk from Toronto, this veteran singer/songwriter is now catching her stride and many a folk is taking notic.  Special guest: Lonnie Glass – a fellow Ontarian, recently and happily settled in Victoria… ‘take a cup of Bob Dylan, a pint of Tom Waits and a quart of Leonard Cohen, mix well.  The result is a gravelly voiced, quirky acoustic playing, modern day troubadour.”

 

Mon Nov 21st – Alex Vissia – singer/songwriter from Stony Plain, AB, she has been performing since the age of 13… nominated for Junos for young up and coming, she is out touring her debut CD ‘A Lot Less Gold’.

 

Tues Nov 22nd – Dress Rehearsal Tuesday – various musicians drop in and play a few of their new works… others attempt for the first time… all in all it is about community… no fear… no attitudes… just people getting their ‘legs’.  (drum kit and amps in place)

 

Weds Nov 23rd – Joey Wright – All you acoustic guitar players get your butts down here… on of Canada’s faster and finer guitar pickers, he also writes sensitive, introspective ballads.

 

Thurs Nov 24th – Nomad / Kinobe  - sufi acoustic guitar meanderings with west African rhythms.

 

Fri Nov 25th – Ryan McMahon… singer/songwriters from Ladysmith giving up a solo concert before Christmas.

 

Sat Nov 26th – Christopher Arruda – A Nanaimo singer/songwriter making waves – see why the industry is taking note.

 

Sun Nov 27th 2pm – Youth Dress Rehearsal – Like your Tuesday night open mic, but for those under 16.

 

Sun Nov 27th 8pm – Tim Williams – This gentleman plays a mean acoustic blues guitar… a storyteller for sure.

Showroom update Nov 3rd to Nov 11th

Good day!  Here are the shows coming up in the next week or so….

 

Thursday Nov 3rd – Monkey Junk – Swamp R&B, soul boogie and bedroom funk… Maple Blues award winners & Juno winners… electric blues at its best.

 

Friday Nov 4th – Rukus – ‘Golden Age of Rock n Roll’ … from Elvis to the Beatles and everything in between played the way you remember hearing them.

 

Saturday Nov 5th – The Royal Canadians / Redwood Green / Jordan McWilliam – three young local indie acts that explore rock n roll in their own various fashions.

 

Sunday Nov 6th 2pm – The Hope King Hour – 90 minutes of great entertainment on the first Sunday of each month – with a local young musician highlighted.

 

Sunday Nov 6th 7:30 pm – Marc Ross / Naomi Payan – They shared the stage this spring and a musical relationship started up – note the early start time…

 

Monday Nov 7th – Jessie Brewster – promoting a new CD ‘Wrecking Ball at the Concert Hall’, he just wrapped up a successful tour of the East Coast, Nashville and Austin.

 

Tuesday Nov 8th – Blues Tuesday (blues open mic/jam)  Where various off-duty blues players get together and rent ice time to shoot a game or two of musical shinny… no attitudes…. always interesting.  Hosted by Thor and the Thundercat.

 

Wednesday Nov 9th – Wendell Ferguson – The guitar players’ guitar player…. in a Chet Atkins style… CCMA approved… using references such as Lynn Miles / Russell de Carle / the Laws / Katherine Whitely to name a few..

 

Thursday Nov 10th – Jon & Roy – calling Victoria home, they have toured Europe, Canada and the USA as an unassuming folk act…. now a trio they take small songs and make earworms out of them.  They sold out Alix Goolden Hall last year (capacity 810!)

 

Friday Nov 11th – Bonnie St. Croix –  touring her new CD ‘ Canadian Girl’ (where one song was recorded in each Province and Territory of Canada.

Showroom update Oct 16th to 25th

Hello!  Here’s the schedule for the next 10 days…
Sunday the 16th  8pm Washington & Cook Quartet - Washington and Daniel Cook bring their funkified urban jazz to the Showroom for their first visit …I think you might want to check this one out… $20 door $15 adv.
Monday the 17th 8pm - Wes Borg’s Comedy Night and Auditions - So you think you can be funny….not just at stand up, maybe song writing, poetry or a skit…even video come grab 5 minutes of that potential 15 minutes of your fame and let the audience encourage you to continue.  Wes Borg…. a mainstay in the Victoria comedy scene, he also brings a van full of out of town acts)  $15 door $12 adv.
Tuesday the 18th 8pm – Dress Rehearsal Tuesday…various musicians drop in and play a few of their new works…others attempt for the first time…all in all it is about community…no fear …no attitudes… just people getting their ‘legs’ …(drum kit and amps are set in place for this evening) $5 for everyone.
Thursday the 20th *7:30pm*  - Sister Girl - 4 gals and a guy from Revelstoke that sing in such a harmonious fashion….they played the Crofton Hotel Showcase Venue and the VIEX in Augustand impressed the heck out of me with their live performance…on the island to record with David Essig, a concert at the Showroom was a must and so an early evening arrangement was made to accommodate their return to Protection Island.  $15 door $12 adv.
Friday the 21st 8pm – Kids Today / Gold & Shadow - if you have a fondness for that wonderful Hammond B3 sound then this is the evening for you…Tim Boss comes up from Victoria with his drummer Matt, instruments in hand and ready to blow your mind….they sure did last time, so much that I jumped at the chance to bring them back.  Yes….hammond organ and drums….that is all.  And as for Gold and Shadow….great rock’n’roll…indie feel.  A night of gigantic entertainment value.  $15 door $12 adv.
Saturday the  22nd 8pm – Lucy Mistreated - this young 4 piece band showed up for an ‘open mic’during the 2011 Duncan Cowichan Summer Festivaland then they opened ( on short notice ) for Three Quarter Stone last week their music is worth listening to…I really enjoy their enthusiasm and dedication and so here they are with their own night..special guest: tba
Sunday the 23rd 8pm – Los Morenos - ‘spanish erotica laid on a bed of groove’ calling Calgary home these days these guys bring that latin/Cuban/south american flair to the Showroom once again so cool, hard not to tap your toes.  $20 door $15 adv.
Monday the 24th 8pm – Ann Vriend / Mike Edel - this gal has voice that is reminiscent of Dolly Parton….that said… her on piano and vocals will guarantee an evening of most memorable moments….she has soul, albeit her own, and power…Mike is one of the finer singer / songwriter/performers to call Vancouver Island hom.e award winning, he brings a band of stellar musicians to join him in his fantastic musical journey.  $20 door $15 adv.
Tuesday the 25th 8pm ish – Dress Rehearsal Tuesday ‘For The Love of Words’ with your host Bill Levity …a written word appreciation night…come out and share your poems,stories or your favourite piece by someone else…sing it, chant, word breakdancing, read off the page, it’s a night of word appreciation …most empowering and invigorating.  $5 for readers…$10 for others.

October 8th to 12th

Gonna give you all a heads up on the great shows scheduled for the next while…What to do on a long weekend with your visiting company?  Bring them to the Showroom….

Saturday with Kendall Patrick and Alex Hicks performing their originals and occasional renditions of standards in a fashion that is most engaging…sometimes solo, sometimes working the song with each other…

on Sunday afternoon at 2pm for Anna Borch who is putting in the stage time and showcasing her original tunes as well as another young artist of her choice once a month …

and in the evening at 8pm is Greg Madill…yes this where you want to give thanks …quite a gifted songwriter and musician , he brings his stellar trio for the performance….

The long weekend does include Monday and so we have good solid hard rock to end off the holiday… Three Quarter Stone and Fairweather Father…a good way to stay young…

Blues Tuesday again…yessiree….the monthly blues evening where various blues musicians get together and rent ‘ice time’ to shoot a game of musical shinny….showcasing as well as jammin’ with Thor and the Thundercat as the host performers…

Wednesday night sees Professor Gall …A Tincture of Junkyard Folk and Steampunk Jazz…..indie / jazz / roots music from Portland…come on give it up for an evening, take the chance….
